About Gyula
A town of about 33,000 inhabitants located in south-eastern Hungary close to the Romanian border, Gyula is known for its sizable Romanian community, its thermal spas and its 13th-Century fortress. Its modern bath covers an area of 8.5 ha in the park of the one-time Almasy Castle, and boasts 19 high-quality pools: thermal pools, children’s pools, Jacuzzis, wave pools and kamikaze landslides, as well as a four-star beach with all of the modern facilities. The well-preserved fortress reminds of the times when the people of Gyula heroically fought back 14 raids of Suleyman’s Ottoman army during a siege in 1566, before they were starved into surrender. The fortress now contains a large museum and a theatre.
