About Szeged
Lying on the Tisza River in south-eastern Hungary, close to the border with Serbia and about 170 kilometres from Budapest, Szeged is Hungary’s fourth-largest city, home to a university and a famous summer Open Air Festival during which theatrical performances take place in Dom Square. The square is dominated by the Medieval tower of St. Demetrius and the two spires of the Cathedral, built in the early 20th Century to commemorate the town’s revival after the disastrous flood of 1879 that had literally wiped it away. There are a number of fish restaurants in Szeged where visitors can taste the country’s famous fish soup; besides that, excellent paprika and salami are manufactured there.
